What is Torrent ? | All you have to know about Torrent | Is torrent legal or illegal ?

What is Torrent ?

Torrent is nothing but a downloading process mechanism that uses peer to peer(P2P) connection mechanism. A torrent also known as BitTorrent was developed by a Python based programmer Bram Cohen in 2001 to distribute data in such a way that the original distributor would be able to decrease bandwidth usage while still being able to reach at least the same amount of people.

As you know, while you download a file, you are directly connected to the server and the file that is stored on the server is serving you the downloading. But in case of Torrent, the concept of server is not present. When you start a torrent, you are directly connected to a peer to peer(P2P) connection of such computers that uploading the file. To browse or download torrent files, you need to have a torrent client application such as BitTorrent, u Torrent etc. Then you have to search for torrent files and download as per your requirement and the resources of the network connection of that pear to pear (P2P) network.

How Does Torrent Works ?

Torrent is a mechanism or connection that connects to a peer to peer (P2P) network to serve files at a rate of zero. In that connection, there is peers and seeders. Peers are those computers that are downloading the files and the seeders are those who's are uploading the file. If you are downloading a file, then you are a peer and simultaneously a seeder of that particular file because, that mechanism is such that, if you are connected to the torrent network and have finished a download or downloading a torrent, you are simultaneously uploading that file or that part that has been downloaded. You can also limit the uploading speed. So, to download a file you must take care of the ratio of seeders and peers. If seeders are more enough than peers then you'll get a higher download speed. Because, in what speed the seeders are uploading the file, the same speed is distributed among all the peers of that torrent. Hence, if you have a very good internet connection but the upload speed of the torrent distributor is low, then you won't receive that much speed of your ISP(Internet Service Provider). Suppose a torrent have 100 seeders and 500 peers, then you'll get very low speed for that torrent. The peek speed of a torrent file is limited up to the distributor's or seeder's uploading speed.

Due to no existence of server and direct peer to peer(P2P) connection, there is no authority to have control over it. Hence, many pirated movies, songs, games or even very expensive OS also distributed via torrent without permission and a rate of zero. Torrent is no illegal but pirated things are illegal enough. But due to the direct network between computers, there is no one to have control over this.
